I was out of town for most of December (December 1-13 on business and 13-20 on Vacation) So I missed all the Christmas parties at work or at church or with friends. However, one party at work is my HAM Radio club's annual Christmas party. Every year they have a raffle so I bought some tickets this year before I left on my trip. And guess what? I won! Very cool. My HAM gear so far is pretty sparse (a 2m mobile rig from the 80's and two 2m hand held units). Well I got a Yaesu FT-8900R with a Comet UHV-4 Antenna. Very cool. This is a quad-band rig, so I can transmit on 10M, 6M, 2M, and 440Mhz. Now I just have to find a good antenna mount for my car and install it. I am thinking of getting a trunk-lip antenna mount, but am not sure if they will work with my car's trunk. My car is over 40 years old, and the edge of the trunk is different than modern day cars (about 1/2" thick).

We went to Church On The Beach today. It was great fun. Our church holds services on Torrance Beach from the weekend after Memorial day to the weekend before Labor Day. One of our highlights of the summer.

I have been reading about some pretty cool electric scooters lately.

This one is pretty inexpensive:

It is only $1999. But it has a 40MPH top speed and only 45 mile range. It uses Lead Acid batteries.

This one is better, but a lot more expensive:

$11,000 but Max speed 62MPH and 68 Mile range. It uses NiMH batteries and a brushless motor.

Today I went out to lunch with some friends from work. We had a great lunch at Joey's Smokin BBQ. It is a new place in Manhattan Beach. I had the pulled pork sandwich which is always a good test of a BBQ place. Pretty good. They even have Sweet Tea!

Asian-Pacific American Heritage Picnic

Today at work they had the "Asian-Pacific American Heritage Picnic" in the central mall at my company. It was great fun. I chose one of the Vietnamese Sandwiches for my lunch.

They had musicians and a martial arts demo. Raffle prizes too, but I didn't win anything.

I had my name written in chinese calligraphy and got a piece of origami too. Fun times!

Bike To Work Day

Today is Bike To Work Day during Bike To Work Week. I fixed my tire that went flat last night, and rode my bike in today as well. I have ridden in three days so far this week. I saw several other bike riders, mostly when I got close to my work in El Segundo. They had a pit stop set up at the Nash Green Line station near my work and were giving out goodie bags and bagels and drinks. I of course participated! Free stuff and Free food! Who can beat that! I had someone take my picture next to the sign there and they also took my picture for the Los Angeles Metro system with their camera. He was a volunteer for the LA Metro. Did you ride your bike to work today? If not, why not?

Bike Fair

Today, Wednesday, we had a Bike Fair during lunch at my company. This is the middle of Bike-to-Work Week, so I was looking forward to looking at some bikes and accessories and get some other biking information. Well, I was sadly disappointed. The only representatives there were our own bicycle commuting club, with lots of handouts and maps from the local metro system, AAA with fliers and insurance, and the LA Wheelmen. No bike shops. It turns out that they had three separate shops lined up to come, and one backed out last week, and the two others backed out just yesterday! What a bummer. I wish the local bike shops around here supported bike commuting!

2007 Bike To Work Challenge T-Shirt

This is Bike To Work Week. Today is the Bike To Work Challenge. It is a contest amongst the local companies in El Segundo to get the most number of people to ride their bikes in to work. When I signed the form as I rode in, I was number 60 for our company. It is a good day to do it too since they give away a t-shirt and goodie bag to each rider that comes in. They also have bagels, coffee, and other food to eat for breakfast too. They will let us know later today who won the challenge.

Christmas 2006

We had a good Christmas time this year. Spent it at home with family. Here are some pictures from the time:

We had Christmas Eve Dinner with my family at my sister's house in Seal Beach. We always have beef fondue for dinner.

After dinner we went to the Christmas Eve service at my sister's church, Grace Community Church in Seal beach.

Jeffrey got chosen as one of the volunteers to help with a portion of the service.

This is my mom's favorite part of the service. The pastor and choir director do a duet of "Oh, Holy Night" together. It is great!

Our Christmas morning is pretty chaoitic at first. Everyone is allowed to open their stocking when they get up. The presents wait until after breakfast.

Christmas breakfast was great! Eggs and lots of extras.

Jeffrey and Bradley made a fort from all the gifts.

Here are the pictures from my business trip to Alaska. I went from December 16 to 22. I went there to reinstall two photometers for my work. The photometers measure the northern lights (Aurora). We use the information to learn more about the earth's upper atmosphere.
